Heavy Metals in Food: What Every Mom Should Know

Heavy Metals in Food: What Every Mom Should Know

As moms, we want the best for our families. But here’s a truth you might not know:

Foods grown in the ground can naturally absorb trace amounts of heavy metals — like Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic — from the soil.

These metals are naturally occurring and impossible to completely eliminate. But at BOOBIE*, we take this seriously. That’s why we go above and beyond to source ingredients that test low for heavy metals, always striving to set a higher standard for moms and their families.

Why Heavy Metals Show Up in Food

  1. Plants can pull trace amounts of metals from the soil they grow in.
  2. Different farms, regions, and growing conditions lead to very different levels.
  3. While you can’t “remove” heavy metals entirely, you can choose better sources that naturally test lower.

Why Fruits and Vegetable Foods Don’t Carry Warnings — But Powders Do

Take foods like strawberries, spinach, or avocados. They naturally contain trace amounts of heavy metals from the soil they're grown in.

Yet you don’t see Proposition 65 warnings on fresh produce in the grocery store.

Here’s why:

When fruits and vegetables are sold whole, they’re regulated as conventional foods and aren’t subject to the same labeling requirements.

But when those same ingredients are:

  • dried
  • concentrated
  • turned into powders or supplements

What This Means for You

  • A warning does not mean a product is unsafe.
  • It reflects how the ingredient is processed and labeled.
  • It does not mean anything unusual or harmful was added.

Our Approach at BOOBIE*

We go beyond industry standards by:

  • sourcing ingredients that test low for heavy metals
  • using third-party testing for quality and safety
  • prioritizing clean, nutrient-dense superfoods

Because while heavy metals can’t be completely eliminated from nature, they can be carefully managed through sourcing, testing, and formulation.

When compared to many protein powders and functional bars, our levels consistently test lower because we actively seek out suppliers with the cleanest sources available.

Food Safety Starts With Transparency

At BOOBIE*, we’re moms too. That’s why our promise is simple:

  1. Test everything.
  2. Reject what doesn’t meet our standards.
  3. Always put safety before shortcuts.

Heavy metals in food are a reality. But with BOOBIE*, you can feel confident knowing we’ve done the work to find the safest, cleanest, most functional superfoods for you and your family.

FAQ: Prop 65 + BOOBIE*

Q: Why is there a Prop 65 warning on my BOOBIE* product?

Because we’re a California company, and California loves its warning labels. Prop 65 requires us to add a label if a product might contain even tiny amounts of certain naturally occurring substances (like heavy metals from the soil where plants grow).

Q: Wait... does that mean your products aren’t safe?

Nope. Same clean, functional superfoods. Same high standards. Nothing changed in your BOOBIE* products — except that our labels now cover California law.

Q: But I don’t live in California. Why am I seeing this?

We sell nationwide through Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Thrive Market. Once products leave our warehouse, they can end up anywhere. (Amazon, for example, pulls from multiple warehouses to ship in under 48 hours.)

Q: If I’m outside California, can I ignore the warning?

Yes. Prop 65 applies only to California residents. The other 49 states do not require this label. Fun fact: Even Disneyland has Prop 65 warnings. If Mickey Mouse has to post one, so do we.

Q: What About Test Results?

We often hear: “Can I see your test results?”

The short answer: yes, we test — a lot. But it’s not as simple as sending one document. Each product is tested:

  • ingredient by ingredient
  • as a finished formula
  • for every lot produced

That adds up to dozens (sometimes hundreds) of tests per product. We’re currently working on a smart way to share this data with moms in a clear, digestible way.

Bottom line: This warning is about compliance, not safety. Our products remain rigorously tested, meet or exceed safety standards, and have been trusted by moms across the country since 2015.
